Both the Morrison Government and the Opposition have promised big this week, pledging additional funding for MRI scans for women suffering from breast cancer.

The Coalition has set aside $32.6 million in the upcoming Federal Budget, saving patients up to $1,500 per scan.

The Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, stated that the Coalition supports ‘Australians diagnosed with breast cancer by reducing out of pocket costs… and that the Government’s strong economic management ensures that we continue to invest record amounts of funding into essential health services’.

The Opposition has promised $47 million for the design of Medicare items that subsidise breast scans if a Shorten-Labor government is elected.

The Shadow Miniser for Health, the Hon Catherine King MP, stated that ‘women with breast cancer will get affordable access to life-saving medical scans under a Shorten Labor government… Labor believes access to healthcare should depend on your Medicare card, not your credit card’.

Breast Cancer Network Australia praised both party announcements, calling them ‘a major step forward for Australians with breast cancer… [that] will help them and their treating teams to make evidence-based decisions about their treatment’.
